Total money lost $300

Type of a scam Online Purchase

This was a two party operation. Recently, my family has been in search of a new dog to add to the family. We felt fortunate when we stumbled upon a seller with 3 corgi puppies remaining out of the total 8 they were originally selling. As purchasing a dog online is foreign to many, our due diligence was done and a chain of 30+ emails was exchanged with the prospective seller ([email protected]). All of our questions and concerns were addressed and there was even an accompanying website; set up with reviews, contact information and available puppies. The email thread and phone numbers provided led to the same person. Upon feeling reassured, we discussed payment with the seller which he informed us was half of the payment up front and half upon receiving the dog. This made sense as of course the seller wants to be sure of a sale and as the buyer you are only paying half of the total cost. All AKC paperwork was to be sent with dog along with food samples and a letter written on their current care. With the Corgi being sold and shipped for $600 total the deal was too good to be true which unfortunately proved true. We sent the $300 to the seller and were provided tracking information for the dog upon their receipt of our payment. All tracking information matched up and was tracked to:

Slightly after tracking information was obtained we also received a delivery notice. Dog was to be picked up from sellers property at 2:30pm and delivered by 11:00pm.

We planned and prepared accordingly for the new dog and a few hours later received the below letter from the courier service stating we were to pay an additional $750 that would be refunded upon receipt of this dog. Immediately we contacted the seller as he stated $600 was the total including shipping. Even though the $750 was stated to be refundable, this was not agreed upon or opted for and therefore presented the concern. He informed us that he wasn’t aware of this either and would call the courier service. A few minutes passed and we received a message back from him attempting to reassure us that he now understood everything and we should just pay this. I was not falling victim to this due to the wording on both the letter and the quick change of heart on the end of the seller with not even an apology. Immediately I knew this was a scam and the concerns we had were solidified. I called the shipping company with the one last ounce of trust I had here. Contact number: ?+1 (631) 260-1295? The person who answered was rather inaudible and tried to talk in circles to get me to pay. He tried to tell me I was the “sole owner” of this dog when I didn’t even see the dog yet or sign any paperwork. He tried to use this concept to state I was now liable for the dog and had no choice but to pay. He went back and forth with me and I assured him there would be no additional funds sent to which he simply hung up on me. At this point, the payment is being disputed and ultimately I want to get this reported immediately to hopefully decrease those scammed under similar circumstances.
