I got an email from my school email introducing me to the survey to make extra money I stupidly bought into it think this is legit, so I get the instructions through the mail. I was asked to purchase 4 Walmart gifts cards each costing $500 and I did. Later I felt something was not writte so the next I check my account and I so it in negative up to the money I spent. I called and the bank and they told me the the check was not good.

I was initially contacted by someone that appeared to be a classmate of mine. I assume that her email was hacked and threw the hacking, people in her address book were contacted. The email talked about a job opportunity being a secret shopper to earn some extra cash. I followed the online website and applied. I received an email back about a week later saying that I was approved to be a secret shopper. After looking at the name of the company on Google, I discovered that it might be a scam. I did not reply but have since received two more emails and a text message from a “George Wilson.”

Type of a scam Other

Was logged into my graduate school email and a post from a teacher popped up saying that they were making money doing secret shopper surveys. I placed a contact card on their website and they contacted me to tell me that I was approved. They then sent me a cashiers check of $2465 to purchase 4 Walmart gift cards of $500 each. It said that there were built-in restrictions on the check to keep you from being able to cash it and that it had to be deposited in an active checking account. I did not deposit it, I cashed it, but then when I tried to tell my daughter about how easy it was to make $300 ("the salary"), we started to look for company information but could find none, the only thing that came up was sites that talked about secret shopper scams, so we started reading and the scams sounded just like what I was asked to do. By then they had already emptied out two of the gift cards, I ran to Walmart to try and stop them from doing the others and was successful. I then called my bank and the police to file a report. Luckily I was saved and not out of any money because I did not deposit the check.

Mystery Shopper Scam: A "George Wilson" contacted me saying I was approved to work for Gladstone Survey Inc. as a mystery shopper. "He" sent me three emails and also a text message. This was a transparent attempt of a scam. Poor grammar and typos, no legit website, and a very fake linkedin account tipped me off.
