Type of a scam Government Agency Imposter

I got a call about 10 days ago saying that the Federal Student Loan Agency/Association wanted to find out if I wanted to see if my student loan could be eligible for relief. I saved the message and planned to call back. Today, 7/27/2020, I got a call that went straight to voicemail. The number on my phone associated with the call was 0000000000. On the voicemail Matthew said that today was the last day to complete the application to get loan relief and that I should call 916 713-7566 to complete the application. I called the number and spoke to another male whose name I don’t remember. The call quality wasn’t great and I could hear domestic sounds in the background (dog) so I thought that he was working at home. Not unusual for these times. He asked me for identifying information so that he could locate my account. I gave him 2 emails, and spelled my name correctly (he already had my phone # from caller id). He couldn’t find my account and asked for my social security # which I gave him. I might have given him my birthdate as well. I’m not sure. Then he asked what lender I had my loan with. He offered a few names, one of which was mine (nelnet) and seemed to indicate that he found it. The call disconnected so I called back and got another male and said that I was disconnected. This guy asked if I had more than $10,000 in loans and I said no. Then the call disconnected again and I got suspicious. I called back and asked for them to give me information so that I could determine if they were legitimate. They claimed that they were from the Federal Student Loan Forgiveness Program. I asked how I could verify and they hung up. Then I called them back and yelled at them and they hung up. They were very smooth and calm and well rehearsed in the normal methods of having someone identify themselves to locate an account.

Type of a scam Phishing

I received a message on June 23 from someone claiming to be from the Student Loan Forgiveness Hotline saying she/they were responding to a recent inquiry. I was told to call 888-242-9948 Monday through Friday between the hours of 9 and 5 Pacific Time.

I did not call them, because it seemed like a scam, but called the Federal Loan contact number and was told the call did NOT come from them. They suggested I call the Student Loan Support line to report the call and see if they could do anything to let people know or to engage in action since it CLEARLY seems to be a scam.

The Student Loan Support line said they cannot take any action, but suggested I contact you.

I have been receiving phone calls from this area code for the about 5-7 years around the same time each year (tax season).

One year they even got my husband to buy a green dot card (being naive and just not knowing) with a large lump sum and pay them over the phone by providing them the purchase information.(Never fell for that again!!!)

This year was a little different.

On today, 03/03/2020, at approximately 7:30 pm I received a phone call from the above number and when I answered the phone the man introduced himself (it’s always the same voice but a different name) and stated his business.

Once he finished I had informed him that I had already spoken to the representative from the actual student loans and had set up a payment arrangement.

When I informed him of my arrangement for my student loans and politely bid him good night (along with a Thank You) he begins to start grunting on the phone.

It freaked me out so I immediately hung up.

I have been in College online for almost 4 years and was accepted for a Pell Grant. I feel this is how these people received my information. I have never had a Federal Student Loan. These people are offering me Federal Student Loan Forgiveness, and I have nothing to forgive. These people call me three to four times a week, always from a different phone number. No matter if I block them or not they always get through to me. I have tried my best to get additional information from them, they hang up on me, I tell them I do not have a Federal student loan, they hang up on me, I tell them to quit calling me, they hang up on me, I push the option for them to quit calling me, they continue to call.

This is my third report on these scams. I am literally adding numbers to my auto-reject list as I receive the calls and copying them into a memo so I can file reports. It’s up to three calls a day during the week, all during the school and work day. Sometimes they leave a message if I don’t answer. I would like to reiterate that while I have debt incurred, I do not have student loans. I believe I am only pegged because I am 32 years of age and I finished my second year of public college.

I have received 6 calls. 3 calls a day within the last 2 days from all of these numbers. This is harassment. I add each one to auto reject and they keep calling with different numbers. I need this to stop.
