Called pretending to be Eversource claiming I was behind on payments and power was going to be cut if I did not call and send money. Ironically had just paid this month’s bill the day before so I knew this was a scam.

Type of a scam Utility

I was contacted by someone who claimed they worked for Eversource. They said my electricity would be shut off that night if I did not pay the $400 security deposit covering the cost of new electric panel. They claimed the company was replacing them and it was a mandatory service. They told me to load a prepaid card with the $400 and pay using that or else the payment wouldn’t go through immediately and my service would be shut off. They set up a time that someone would be out to replace the panel the following day.

Number left an automated voicemail claiming my power would be shut off due to missing payments. After checking the official website for Eversource and finding that this number was not on the company contact page I felt in my gut that this was an attempt to scam customers like me.

I was called about shutting off electric power immediately from Eversource on Saturday 11/16 around 9:45am. I received two voicemails. I went to the Eversource website and called their number to verify information first. However, nobody picked up their customer service. So, I called back the number on the voicemail thinking this was an alternate number monitored on the weekend. I reached someone on this number. His name was Santhar or Samanth or something similar and had an Indian accent. He claimed to be Eversource and that I was missing a “security deposit”. Having recently moved it was particularly alarming and sounded plausible. He did ask for my account number which I didn’t have and then asked for my address. He then put me on hold to “check the status of my electric disconnect”. He became very hostile after I questioned him or raised my voice. His tactic was to be rude and never stop talking. While he continued talking with no real explanations, I said I never received anything via mail. He responded snidely “you probably missed it”. I stopped talking and he realized I may have hung up, his demeanor changed quite quickly to friendly. He was in bait mode and needed to change his tone to ensure a result. He asked for my closest zip code to find the closest Eversource office and have it handled ASAP. He then put me on hold, came back with a nearby address. When I asked if a copy of a statement and person will be there, he said yes. He wanted to stay on phone with me to ensure when I got there. He then said how stressful this must be for me being a new customer. Unbelievable!

I put him on mute, went on Eversource website searched for scams and verified that I was in midst of one. I hung up on the scammer, called the number again on Eversource website provided on their fraud page and nobody answers again (probably because it was a Saturday morning). The scammer keeps calling back, since I was near the location he gave me, which turns out to be a Walmart. I asked the scammer again to verify the Eversource address as I was at a Walmart. He said the address is correct and that cash and debit cards are the only way to ensure immediate payment and keep my electric on. He tells me to take him off speakerphone because he wants to walk me through the process when I get in the store. The process is, you guessed it, buy a Visa card and give him the account information after I load it with the funds. I asked him to confirm the amount and he had increased the price from the initial phone call! The amount was 498.15, initially it was a lower 400 dollar amount. I kept him on speakerphone and mute as I went up to the manager in the store and asked if there was law enforcement present as I had a scammer on the phone who instructed me to come to this Walmart. Unfortunately, there wasn’t an officer on duty and the manager took the phone telling the person to stop harassing Walmart customers and using the store as a location to scam people. The scammer called back two more times after that. The manager of the store said I should report this to the police. I went to my local station, however, they said there isn’t anything they can do. The scam reports usually go nowhere so they stopped taking them. He did say that these scams will likely increase with the Holidays.

I was fortunate that I recognized the scam and no money was lost. However, it’s quite unsettling that they have my information and were very aggressive about calling even after being hung up on.

The Eversource website shouldn’t list a number to call in case of fraud that isn’t monitored on weekends. The scams apparently are happening on the weekend and to have a number not monitored to report and verify account information is poor customer service.

It’s also unsettling to hear that my local police were not filing reports about these scams. Their advice was to use sites like the ScamPulse.com and social media to alert others. I hope this helps someone else.

Call from a local number with the same area code and exchange as my number. I receive frequently, but don’t usually answer.

Recorded message saying press 1 for 30% discount on energy bill (which is not my electric company), 0 to be removed from the list.

I pressed 0. Man said hello twice. Then told me to speak up. I asked, "Who is this?" He started on a monologue about saving money on my bill. I interrupted and asked to be removed from the list. He said, "Suck it, you [censored]ing b**ch…." I hung up.

Caller claimed (several times) to be an Eversource employee following up on a letter supposedly sent with our last bill regarding a rate increase. She said she was calling because we hadn’t responded to the letter, and that our rate would increase significantly the next day. She said to lower our rate, our new energy supplier would be *** Energy (which is probably who the call was really from). She was very convincing, but I continued to question and told her it sounded like a scam. I told her I would call Eversource directly regarding anything to do with our account, and she immediately disconnected the call. I then contacted Eversource to report the scam call and registered a complaint on the DNC site. I am reporting here to warn others as well.

I’ve been receiving calls from 203-874-5312. It is a recording stating that they are from Eversource and can reduce my electric bill if I press one now and speak with a representative to see if I qualify for a lower electric bill. I’ve been ignoring the calls and when the calls were reaching three times a day, from my landline phone, I decided to answer and press one. It was a woman that asked me a few quesitons. She asked my zip code, if I pay for my own bill or if I received help from the federal gov’t. She told me that I qualified for a discount rate on my electric bill and asked me to give her information that is on my bill. I told her that I do not give personal information over the phone and she hung up on me. It is a scam and I wanted to share with the BBB about my experience. I continuously receive calls on my landline of calls like this….why doesn’t it just end.

This telephone number had prevously left a message on my phone yesterday and called again today ….To learn about Eversource discounted rate of 20-25% because you are a good customer select #1. Which I did and then a person ( Indian accent, I believe) asked for my account number and would put me on hold while I retrieved the information from my bill. I did not give them any billing information but, I asked what rate they were now offering and then the phone became disconnected.

I called Eversource & was informed that no such telephone solicitation was going on by the Eversource company.

This number contacted me on my cell phone. The phone only rang once and no number was displayed on the ID. Soon after, a voicemail notification popped up along with the number. The caller did not identify herself or her company. She claimed to want to review my electric bill and provided a reference number. I currently rent and do not have an account with any utility company. I decided to return her call and see what happened. I on hold for several minutes and when connected the agent did not identify herself by name or identify the company only with an agent number. I asked which electric company she represented and she replied with Eversource. When I explained that I wasn’t actually an Eversource customer she abruptly apologized, claiming my number would be removed from their call list, and disconnected the call.

They said that a person would be coming in an hour or so to shut off our electricity because of this past due balance. They then gave me another phone number (1-844-484-2527) to call to take care of the matter. I called that number and they asked me for the amounts of the payments made from July and August. They then said that for some reason, those payments had not been processed and that we owe for those months, plus a little more for fees. They wanted me to pay over the phone. I hung up and called the actual Eversource phone number and explained my situation and they said that that’s a scam that’s been occurring lately.

Please press 1 to find out. I called eversouce and they said they do not make those phone calls. Most likely from other service provider wanting us to switch electricity provider. We have not pressed 1 to listen to any further, so we do not know what they would ask us because we felt this was a scam or at the least a business trying to mislead us they were eversource and wanting us to change to them as provider. Scammer called place of business claiming to be EverSource stating that our account was severely past due and we need to meet them in person with $2000 cash to avoid having power cut off at location. They could not even give us the account number. When we called the number back, the recording for the 800 number stated that it was EverSource leading us to believe this was true. The scammer even sweared at an employee after being questioned.

After researching website, it was discovered that EverSource would never do this and the 800 numbers did not match.

Caller told me they were calling from Eversource and the electric supply rate will increase on July 1, 2017. My supply rate will get a discount because I am a selected customer to get a lower rate and asked to verify my Service reference #. Then asked to respond the answers I gave with a "yes" and verify the customer name on the bill. The caller said that I would receive a letter in the mail verifying my special electric rate.

I answered the phone

A man politely offered to save us money on our energy bill.

I was suspicious because:

1) the foreign voice

2) the noise in the background ( many many people in one room)

3) he started asking me questions that Eversource would already know

4) he made reference to my ex husband (his name is on the deed to the house but not the energy bill)

5) the caller became very very excited when I lied and said I have 5 eversource accounts .. but he still could not provide me with the number for the one I actually have.

He offered to call back tomorrow when I had all my energy bills in hand.

I don’t pick up the calls any more, but the calls come in daily. They keep changing the CT number they call from and you can never call back and get a person. I received a robot-call from Eversource (the local energy utility) claiming I was eligible for a discount on my power bill. I was instructed to press button 1 on my phone to talk with a representative. This a clear scam because Eversource does not make unsolicited phone calls to customers regarding discounts (I confirmed this with Eversource customer service).

Furthermore, I never follow robo-call instructions to press any phone button because this may transfer my phone line to another State or Country.

Normally, I never receive such scam calls because I use my voice mail to screen calls and, to date, I’ve never had a scammer leave a message. This is a good method for all, especially seniors, to avoid being exposed to scam callers.
