Type of a scam Other

I received multiple phone calls over several days from two men identifying themselves as deputies in the Sheriff’s Department. They attested there was a bench warrant for my arrest due to my not showing up for jury duty. They said I owed two fines amounting to almost $700. They had the correct date of my jury service but, even though I had no proof, the recording had advised me each evening when I phoned in, that it was not necessary to report. The scammers asked me to put money on a "recharge" card at a market and bring it to the sheriff’s office. When I called back, the phone was answered by a rotary system with a particular extension for the Warrants Department. Seemed real to me, although instead of complying with their instructions, I consulted an attorney and wrote to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and the Los Angeles Superior Court (from whom I eventually received a reply)..
