Type of a scam Family/Friend Emergency

The scammer called our landline, presented himself as our grandson, and talked to "his" grandpa. He said he had been in an accident in NJ, refused a breathalyzer test and had been arrested. He needed $7,500 immediately and asked us to get the money, split it 3 ways and put in 3 separate envelopes, then mail in a FedEx box overnight. Believing this was truly our grandson, we followed those directions. The next day he called and needed another $8,000. We stated we didn’t have that much savings and ended up sending another $4,500 to this same address. We failed to check with our grandson or our daughter to validate the situation. We want to prevent others from falling for this scammer.
