Type of a scam Debt Collections

I received a phone call from 2083475381, from a male individual claiming to represent a company collecting a debt from Capital One. He told me the call was being recorded, and before moving forward, asked to verify the last four digits of my social security, which I confirmed. He was speaking fast, and I asked him to repeat himself. I informed him twice that I have no debts with Capital One, and that this sounds like a scam. He said thank you very much and he hung up on me.

I got a voicemail saying it was Capital One fraud department wanting to talk to me about fraudulent charges on my account. I called the number back. They asked for my name and credit card number. They also asked for social security number and birthday when I didn’t give them a card number. When I asked for the reason they wanted to talk to me, they couldn’t give me a clear answer, and seemed flustered. They transferred me to other people, each wanting my social security number. When I questioned why they needed it, they said they actually didn’t need it. I hung up. I then called the customer service number on the Capital One website, and they said they had no record of anyone trying to contact me.

Type of a scam Phishing

I received a call from Carol from "Capital One" saying that I am eligible to lower my interest rate. I gave her my name and last four numbers of my social security number. I started wondering if the call was legit, so I called Capital One and they told me there were no offers going on at this time. I called the number for Carol and she began giving me the same spiel. I interrupted her and she asked why I was calling and I told her that I believed that it was a scam. She hung up on me. The real Capital One gave me the number at Experian to put a credit alert on my social security number.

This sounds like the recent scam from Wells Fargo opening credit accounts for people that had not requested them. I received a statement for two Visa credit card accounts, one in my name and one in my wife’s name. We had close these over four years ago when we closed our Capital One bank account. I called the customer service number on the Capital One website, which was different from the one on the statement, and was told the phone number and address were valid. I told them we did not want these credit card accounts and asked they be closed. I was instructed to contact the ScamPulse.com if I had not requested these accounts.

They had all my info my credit card #, my online banking #, my balance, my address.
