Voice Scam (vishing): "Hi this is (name) calling you back on a recorded line. How are you today?" I said "ok", and it immediately hung up. So now they have my recorded voice for approving … whatever. I typically don’t answer calls from unknown #s, but I’m looking for a new job, and I’ve applied to a number of companies. It could be a potential employer.

At 10:57 am I received a phone call from ***. I did not understand the initial comment, but I understood, "Can you hear me". As soon as I answered, YES, the caller hung up. When I call the number back it says thank you for calling customer service and gives no company name. I am unable to speak with any customer service, the recorded message says all agents are currently unavailable and to email complaints to,***" thank you and have a wonderful day.

The female voice first asked "Can you hear me?" and in the background it sounded like the dinging of a car door that was open, or a seatbelt alert, which made it seem like it was something casual and they caught me off guard and I said yes. Then they asked if I wanted a Walmart or Target gift card and I said no I’m not interested and hung up.

I received a call on my cell phone from a client’s phone. Upon answering the call the woman asked me if I could hear her and unfortunately I said yes. She referenced that I had been sent extended warranty information for my car and i told her I was not interested. Then I remembered (too late) that there is a scam involved with people asking if you can hear them.

Terrance –

Victim Location 23606

Type of a scam Phishing

An unknown number appeared on my phone and I did not answer it. I work in real estate, so this isn’t unusual. I returned the call and received a recording that it was someone calling about a job I indicated I had shown an interest in online. Knowing I had not been researching any employment through any medium, I promptly hungup. Moments later I received a call back from the same number. The person on the other line identified herself as the same person that was on the recording when I called back. The connection was not good so she asked if I could hear her. I responded yes then instructed her to remove my contact information from their records. Seconds later, she hung up. I remember hearing something about a scam where people would call and ask questions that required a "yes" or "no" answer, so I thought I would report this experience. Hopefully nothing comes of it, but, if it is something malicious, perhaps this will help put the perpetrators out of business.

this same caller has contacted my cell phone on numerous occasions. I do not respond. He says, "My name is Joe and I am an evaluator, I am calling you today on a recorded line. Can you hear me ok?" I NEVER SAY YES. I just say don’t call me again. He does call over and over with a different number appearing. It is exactly the same EVERY TIME. Today, however, it was a little different and that is why I am contacting. Today it had an additional message saying "if you wish to be removed press 1". I did but it makes me fearful that it is some "recording device" that will work against me as if I have signed up for some service. Why can’t the ScamPulse.com and our Government and phone company technicians figure out a way to stop these maniac nascence callers? I hope this is going to go away but I am doubtful it will.

I answered my cell phone although I was not familiar with the number. A male voice started, saying I had been preselected for something or other. I got mad, and was wanting to tell him off for calling, and then he (I do think it was a prerecorded voice) said, "Can you hear me okay?" And before I could think, I said "Yes." Even though I’d heard about this scam. I wasn’t expecting there to be an intro, I thought it was a different type of scam. I started fussing at him, and the voice kept talking, which is when I figured out it was a scam, and I hung up the phone. At that point I realized I’d said "Yes" and now I’m terrified and not sure what to do. News articles aren’t being very helpful.

Today (3-7-17) I received a call from 513-452-5050 Harrison, OH at 10:53a.m.  I answered the phone because I just had gotten off the phone and was expecting a call, and when I answered the guy (he sounded local-no accent) said something and then he said "Can you hear me?" and I said "yes" and the phone clicked right away after that. Victim Location 23229

Type of a scam Travel/Vacations

At 8:46 PM (Eastern time) on Monday, February 27th, 2017, I received a phone call from a number that I did not know, (281) 829-4244. The area code is one that I recognized, so I assumed it was a friend calling (especially considering the time of the call). I answered the phone to immediate silence from the caller. After a few seconds, the caller said she was having problems with her headset and asked if I could hear her. She then proceeded to tell me that since I had previously stayed at one of her company’s resorts in the past (without actually telling me which company she worked for), I qualified for a 75% reduction in price for a trip to Orlando, FL. If this was a simple telemarketing call, then it was unwarranted and un-welcomed. I believe though that this was more than a telemarketing call and that it is actually a scam. I believe the caller’s initial "can you hear me now?" question was meant to elicit a "yes" response from me on a recorded line, the purpose of which could be to unscrupulously and falsely record me saying "yes" to authorizing some sort of fraudulent charge. A simple internet search of this phone number yields very similar experiences (and an almost identical script) by other consumers, thus confirming my suspicion that this caller is indeed a scammer.

I have received this same call three different times but it was only after seeing the pertinent scam alert on TV that I decided to record any ID info I could if I received the same call again. Only a few days later the same call came in (Feb. 3, 2017, 11:46 A.M.) and I only stayed on the call long enough to (loudly) respond "scam" when asked "Can you hear me?" The only ID info I could retrieve is that the incoming call was from Henrico, VA and the phone number was 804/234-2356.

Scammer called on Feb 06, 2017. Call was from the area where I just moved from so I answered it. There was silence, then he asked "can you hear me now ". I answered "sure". When I realized it was a recording, I hung up. Then I called the number back to see if it was a real number. Another recording stated that the offer was over and if I wanted to opt out on future offers to punch 9. This I foolishly did. Call was from Virginia Beach, VA. #757-453-2118

Relates to the ScamPulse.com warning about scams with caller asking, "Can you hear me?" According to a ScamPulse.com article in my local paper, a "yes" response may be recorded for nefarious purposes. The article said to report the number the scammer is calling from at bbb.org/scamtracker. The number the scammer called from on 2/6/17 was 804-414-0670. I have received 2-3 of these calls on my home phone per week for about a month.

I received a call on my home phone today. My caller ID showed only a seven digit phone number 810-5868 with Maple Hts. I’m fairly certain it was a recording. Super high tech automated system. When I said hello. A nice sweet voice identified herself as Emily. She said you stayed at one of our resorts before and then something like we are ready to give you a seventy five percent discount. Then there was a long pause. She asked Can you hear me and I’m sorry I’m having trouble with my headset. I said yes. I’m very concerned. They got hello and yes out of me I called the phone number back. It rings and states you cannot get into this conference. It was something like that.

Victim Location 22485

It was the "can you hear me now" scam that is going around. Phone number and company not identified by caller ID. So many calls these days like this. THE DO NOT CALL LIST does not work anymore, due to lack of enforcement. We must try something else. Credit card companies just send cards to applicants without actual verification. Companies via phone or internet rarely ask for security codes on cards when contacted for fraudulent (or real) sales. Retail brick and mortar stores do not ask for Picture ID when credit or debit cards are used. If all sales could be made more secure, credit card theft and fraud could be reduced. If the Federal Trade commission could penalize and prosecute offenders of the "Do not call list", many of these scams would go away. Even under the "can you hear me now" scam, you should not be able to order something over the phone, mail, etc…without positive proof of the person’s ID and their intent to purchase…not just a recorded "yes" Government, corporations, and even non-profit organizations could do so much to resist these scammers.
