Type of a scam Employment

A job posting for an administrative assistant position was posted on Indeed.com

A job seeker submitted their resume and was advised that they were "short-listed" for a phone interview. Before the interview was scheduled, the person posing as the HR Manager asked the candidate to submit answers to interview questions by email. The job seeker was advised they were advancing to the next round and asked to provide references and a date they would be able to begin employment. The references were never contacted, but the HR Manager then contacted the job seeker and advised them that they had gotten the job and an employment letter was to follow. The letter attached was received – clearly raising some red flags. An internet search revealed this scam has been previously perpetrated using other legitimate company names. The end game appears to be financial gain – the supposed position requires the employee to deposit company funds into their personal bank account. In other instances, the fraudulent employer has asked for some or all of the funds to be returned. Once the money is received by the scammer, the original check is cancelled, resulting in a personal loss for the employee.

Type of a scam Employment

On March 28, 2017 I was contacted by a person claiming to be named Tony Zheng. He stated that he was with a company called Brooks Levy Construction and they were contacting me in regards to an admin. position I applied for on ZipRecruiter. They are a Canadian based company establishing a new office location in Charlotte, NC. His email looked legitimate asking me basic questions about why I wanted the job and what strengths I possessed over other candidates. I answered the questions and immediately received a response saying that I was being considered for the position and I should have a response by Saturday, April 1st with their decision. Saturday came and an email was received saying I was being offered the position with an offer letter attached. I noticed there was no location noted for the new location in Charlotte, so I requested it. They gave me an address of 300 S Brevard St, Charlotte, NC. but no suite number. I googled the address and there was no information about them being located in that building. The think that set off the biggest red flag was the part where they said the office would open on my start date and they wanted to send me a laptop and check to get get the office set up. The signature on the offer letter also looked like it was cut and pasted. I tried to do a little more research on the company, but they have no LinkedIn account, no Facebook account, when you try and do Google Earth street view it shows a house with pool in the back yard and a bunch of farm land around it. They were also not registered on the US/Canadian corporation searches. When I couldn’t find any additional information I reached back out to the "HR representative" Tony to see if he could provide any additional info and told them I found it hard to believe a company would send a complete stranger a check and laptop without actually verbally speaking with or meeting them. I guess they figured out that I wasn’t going to play their game and realized they’ve been caught, because I have yet to get a response from them.
