Type of a scam Nigerian/Foreign Money Exchange
I received a fax at my place of employment that appeared to be an official letter from a law office in Belgium. It was from a Barrister, senior partner, at A Brussels, Belgium based law firm. It states that he got my contact information "from your country public record while searching for a last name similar to my late client’s…" The late clients was said to have died of a heart attack a year after his wife and two children died in a car accident in December 2014. The sum of the "permanent life insurance policy" was noted as 7.5 million euros and is "Payable-on-Death". It states that after their exhaustive efforts to locate a direct or extended family member to late client, he suggests that I stand as the beneficiary to the "insurance permanent policies" of client. In short it states that all legal docs to back up the claim will be secured gradually and forwarded to you as we proceed.
I researched the firm name and website and there is one. Although pretty believable as a site to the untrained eye, I felt it to seem quickly created and vague. I worked with attorneys for over a decade in the capacity of having them as speakers at seminars. I spent years researching for qualified attorneys, which was done mostly via their websites. I also could not find any of the attorney names listed on any legal listings sites. Attorneys usually have their pictures on their websites too, but no pictures on this site. No official accreditations to the three attorneys listed on the site, and the advertising (touting, if you will) for the practice was very broad and practice areas.
I did not respond to this letter so I have not been scammed. I was researching it and quickly found a very similar version of the said letter that I received on this site so I decided to report it. Yes to help people be aware, but also because I already feel a little scammed as I may have dreamt about becoming a millionaire by inheritance for a few minutes and now have to go back to the job.
