Type of a scam Tech Support

The caller ID showed up as NETGEAR INC. he said he was from the BBB and was trying to refund $ to people that had been scammed by a tech company. He knew my name address, telephone # and e-mail. I didn’t have to verify any of this he wanted me to tell him my IP address. When I told him I wanted his telephone # at the BBB to call him back he wanted me to call right away. When I didn’t call right away, I got a call from an invalid # 1-408-929-4762. When I talked to someone from the BBB they knew nothing about this type of operation and they do not refund $.

Caller said he was calling from BBB in New Jersey. A refund was due me for $199 for services I bought but it was never installed on my laptop. I asked for his phone number; he gave me 810-026-0030 which is not operational. He was going to give me a Key ID and help me find it on my computer. He wanted to be sure I was the right person. The number was ***. I asked for his phone number and he kept saying when was a good time to call me. I told him I wanted to call him as I was preparing lunch. He finally used a four letter word after which I hung up.

I think he possibly wanted access to my computer. The reason I am saying this BBB New York is because that is what he told me. This was an attempted scam. These people have called several times recently about a refund because supposedly Iyogi sold software that was never delivered.

Email comes from:

BBB

Abuse Department

Cecelia M Ray

and a claim number (just a long list of numbers)

States: This notification has been automatically generated and sent to you because BBB has got a complaint, claiming that your company is violating the Fair Labor Standards Act.

Then there is a link to download a document to supposedly "dispute" the claim.

Looks like it might be generated in the USA because of the spelling of "labor" other than that not a lot of details.

Obviously a scam.
