Type of a scam Investment

I am an office assistant at a small local real estate firm in the Bay Area. Recently our office received an airmail letter addressed to our broker from someone claiming to be one "Hiroshi Mori", representing the Ashikaga Bank, Ltd. in Japan with connections to a non-existent "specialist" working at Chong Hing Bank in Hong Kong. The letter is vaguely written on a plain sheet of A4 paper with no official company letterhead or even a return address on the envelope; additionally the scammer only provided an email address that may be fraudulent. To my complete knowledge our broker has absolutely no connections whatsoever with any clients, wealthy or otherwise, presently or formerly in Japan, nor do they have any relatives or acquaintances who presently reside or formerly resided in Japan. At this time I cannot trace the origins of the letter and do not know how the scammer found our broker’s contact info, much less why they wrote our office.
