I called the number provided to order an African Grey. After I purchased it, the “breeder” said he was taking it to be shipped. Then, I was sent an email from the shipping company EMS freight stating my bird had been boarded and would be at the airport at 4pm the next day. After that email I was sent a message that I had to send $589 for insurance on the bird. They were using this as ransom money; Saying they would not send my bird unless I paid for the insurance. I called the breeder back and he stated that this is normal and the money would be returned to me after delivery of the bird. Now I am out $1100. This bird was going to be my Birthday present. Freaking con man! I called him and told him the insurance money was not going through my bank and told him I wanted my money back. He hung up on me and apparently blocked my number or it was a burner phone because the phone was no longer in service!
I turned them into the police, but I’m sure there’s no way to trace them. I had a bad feeling about it when the told me to mark friends and family on Paypal, but I did it anyway and now PayPal says there is nothing they can do. The protection they offer is only for goods and services NOT friends and family. I also used Cash app to pay the “ransome” money to the shipper. I feel stupid! Don’t fall for this scam!
